Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program

THE STORY:

Bipolar disorder is a devastating, chronic mental illness with recurring episodes of mania (highs) and depression (lows) that can last from one day to many months. Bipolar disorder causes unusual and dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and behavior.

The turmoil of bipolar disorder is often devastating to careers, personal and social relationships, and affects the whole person, family, and community. 30% of individuals with bipolar disorder will attempt suicide during their lives, and 20% will die by suicide. Suicide is more common in bipolar depression than in unipolar major depression, panic disorder, or schizophrenia. However, the suicide rate goes down dramatically with adequate treatment.

Although the direct cause of bipolar disorder is unclear, it has long been understood that genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors play a role. We know that bipolar disorder runs in families, tends to recur throughout the life span, and is affected by genes and life experiences.

The Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program is creating new hope for those who suffer from this devastating illness. The Prechter Program is a premier research entity focused on personalizing treatment of bipolar disorder to prevent recurrences and to enable those living with bipolar disorder to lead healthy and productive lives.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We all know someone who has been affected by mental illness, whether it’s a friend, a family member, or a friend of a friend. We have all seen the debilitating effect that mental illness can have not just on the ill, but on the ones around them. You can help us fight bipolar disorder as we raise donations for our ground-breaking research projects during the month of May.

Federal funding for mental illness research is at an all-time low, and we depend on donations from private individuals. Every donation made during this campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the World Heritage Foundation - Prechter Family Fund and will make a profound difference!
