Help us meet the ongoing needs victims of violence, teen dating violence, sexual assault, elder abuse, death by suicide, and their families!
ANYONE CAN BE A VICTIM! Victims can be of any age, sex, race, culture, religion, education, employment or marital status. It can be extremely difficult for a victim of domestic violence to acknowledge that abuse is taking place, especially when it’s not physical abuse but rather emotional or psychological. Although both men and women can be abused, most victims are women. Children in homes where there is domestic violence are more likely to be abused and/or neglected. Even if a child is not physically harmed, they may have emotional and behavior problems. Nobody deserves to suffer abuse in a relationship — nobody:
- Elizabeth was stabbed in the stomach with an ice pick and had to go to the hospital in a cab with the icepick hanging in her belly
- Rachel was stabbed in the back over 20 times, while ironing, by a jealous lover
- Angel was beaten over and over by her husband that she now suffers with mental illness, loss her job as a probation officer, and became homeless after fleeing violence
- Cindy, age 7, was molested for months by three young adults, 16, 19, 21 that her mother allowed to live in their home after their mother died. The violence only stopped after her adult brother caught them molesting her.
These are true stories and only some of the realities of victims of violence face daily. As previously stated, anyone can be a victim. A person’s economic status, age, race, sexual orientation, religion, finances, none of it matters. Abuse happen in many of the homes in America, and spill over into our schools, houses of worship, and communities. We all have a responsibility to stop it. As we, advocates to end domestic violence say, “It is all of our problem”.
