BENEFITING: BETHEL WOODS CENTER FOR THE ARTS INC

EVENT DATE: Jun 17, 2017

THE STORY:

In August 1969, half a million people gathered in the small town of Bethel, New York for the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, a three-day festival of peace, love, and music. This monumental event in music and cultural history inspired social responsibility and creative expression and advanced the peace, environment, and civil rights movements.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is located at the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, which was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. We at Bethel Woods are undertaking a series of historic preservation projects that will reveal previously unexplored areas of the festival site and use innovative technologies to immerse visitors in all the stories the site offers.

The first of these—the BINDY BAZAAR TRAILS PROJECT—is marking and restoring the forested trails of the Bindy Bazaar, the festival’s marketplace where vendors sold clothing, jewelry, leather goods, posters, and exotic wares. Trails marked “Groovy Way,” “High Way,” and “Gentle Path” led to colorful booths set amongst hemlocks and ferns. Bindy Bazaar offered woodsy meeting places and crossroads with tire swings and footbridges, beckoning festivalgoers to explore nature and find a peaceful retreat.

Contributions are helping us restore these magical, wooded pathways so that visitors to the historic site can experience the trails for themselves. This important initiative is part of a larger project to improve access to the grounds of the festival’s historic site — keeping the Woodstock and the sixties legacies alive!

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) public charity that inspires, educates, and empowers individuals through the arts and humanities. For more information, please visit http://www.bethelwoodscenter.org/
