BENEFITING: Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day School
Project F.O.C.U.S, is a non profit, student run organization, with our main goal being to provide local public elementary and middle school students around Brooklyn with instruction, mentorship, and guidance in academia, athletics, and both visual and performing arts. We do what we do in an effort to right a major wrong of our society, that being the socioeconomic inequality in which our educational system is rooted. With a large portion of our founding members being former public school students now on scholarship to an elite private school institution, we have found that the disparities between the two systems can no longer be overlooked. Students that have the money to attend more elite schools, have far more resources, connections, and opportunities to enhance their learning experiences than those who are less financially suited. Of all the things in this world that are exclusive to the elite, that are allocated based on circumstance instead of merit, a good education should not be one of them. Thus, Project F.O.C.U.S was created. Project F.O.C.U.S is comprised of a group of high school students, who have come together to introduce the mentees of F.O.C.U.S to things that they would not necessarily have the chance to experience otherwise. Our team includes leaders that are excelling in areas all across the board with nationally ranked athletes, academic scholarship receivers, talented artists, passionate dancers and more. In the summer of 2015, the project began with us using the space at a local church in Canarsie, every day from 10am to 5 or 6 in the evening, to mentor the local kids in academics, athletics, art and dance. We spent hours with the children, working tirelessly to incite change. After growing so attached to the mentees and the mission of our project, we continued our diligent efforts back at the local church space this summer, where Project FOCUS served 55 intelligent, motivated kids from August 1st, to August 29, ultimately culminating in a showcase where the whole community, friends, and family got the chance to see the great work their kids have down. Project FOCUs have decided to up the seriousness and commitment of our project, working for months during the 2015-16 school year, having meetings with people at Poly Prep, and from middle schools around Brooklyn to continue or project throughout the next school year on Poly Prep’s campus, in an attempt to show the kids a glimpse of what they should strive to attain through hard work. We are proud to say that on October 1st, 2016, the project will begin again, serving as a Saturday enrichment program at Poly Prep Country Day School in Bay Ridge, from 9 am to 3 pm. However, Project FOCUS is entirely non-profit. We are solely able to benefit and service our mentees through the generous funding and donations of people who believe in what we offer. The first matter that all donations would go to is a potential van service, that would provide transportation to and from our school, at common meeting place in Brooklyn, due to the location of where many of our mentees live. Secondly, donations would go to provide various school supplies to maintain us throughout the school year. Lastly, donations will go to giving our mentors the ability to take our students on various educational and interesting trips throughout New York City, helping us to maintain our values and service the children the best we can. Please donate! Every penny counts toward bettering the life of a NYC child. Help us fix this faulty system.
