Being unable to afford a turkey for one's family on Thanksgiving is a painful experience, and an all-too-common reality for America's hungry--50% of whom are children.
Project Turkey strives to rectify this situation. By choosing one of New York City's largest food pantries, in one of NYC's hardest-hit neighborhoods, we strive to provide enough turkeys this Thanksgiving so that no one is turned away hungry from The BedStuy Campaign Against Hunger, a 501-c-3 that feeds hundreds of families each day. To accomplish this, we need to purchase at least 650 turkeys.
At approximately $15 each, we need to raise at least $10,000 by November. 100% of money received by BedStuy will be used for turkeys, and 0% will be used for overhead. In 2014, thanks to all of your tremendous help, we raised $9,730 and were able to deliver over 650 turkeys to families in need. In 2015, we did even better and raised $11,915 and delivered several hundred more turkeys. Mayor DeBlasio and Governor Cuomo stopped by to hand some out! Please visit https://www.crowdrise.com/projectturkey2014 and https://www.crowdrise.com/projectturkey2015 to see pictures of the results. You will see the smiles you put on the faces of all the families who lined up for hours in the cold waiting for a turkey.
The need in 2016 remains as dire as always. Let's work together and make it our goal to raise even more than we raised last year. I know we can make it happen--$15 is not a lot to ask for. And Hungry New Yorkers need you, now more than ever. Please visit https://www.crowdrise.com/project-turkey-2016 to donate $15.
We can also really use your help fundraising for this campaign. If you would like to create your own fundraising team, it’s very easy: just visit https://www.crowdrise.com/project-turkey-2016 and scroll down a bit and on the far right click FUNDRAISE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. It will walk you through setting up your own team. You can also feel free to copy and paste this description and email it out to potential donors or post on social media to help raise money for your team.
We all hand out the turkeys in Bed-Stuy a day or two before Thanksgiving. If you would like to join us there, you are more than welcome to, whether you donate or not.
