BENEFITING: PROJECT A W A R E FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: PROJECT A W A R E FOUNDATION
Like many of you, I love the ocean. Scuba diving is my favorite way to explore what lies beneath the waves. After more than 500 hours underwater, the diversity and interconnectedness of aquatic life still amazes me. All of this is in jeopardy, due to humans taking advantage of an ecosystem that we rarely see, making it easy to forget about our impact. We overfish, leave our dangerous trash (e.g. plastic bags, fishing nets), and contribute to climate change.
I am running in the NYC Marathon on November 5, 2017, to raise money and awareness for Project Aware.
Supporting me in this endeavor will help efforts to do the following:
- Fight to stop the ugly journey of our trash
- Insist on full protections for the most vulnerable shark and ray species
- Negotiate policies that ensure a brighter future for our ocean and its wildlife
As I am training and supporting this worthy cause, I am also taking on the challenge of making changes in my own life to reduce trash and my carbon footprint (if you want to follow my steps towards doing this, I will post a blog link shortly -- I make no promises as to its entertainment value).
Thank you for supporting ocean protection through Project AWARE's NYC Marathon Team, it fuels grassroots activities and policy change in two areas - Marine Debris and Sharks in Peril - necessary to ensure a clean, healthy ocean planet today and in the future.
