Project AWARE Foundation brings together a growing, global movement of scuba divers, runners, swimmers and marine enthusiasts who are willing to take action in their own communities to protect oceans and implement lasting change. Our focus is on two major ocean issues:
Sharks in Peril
100,000,000 sharks are killed each year, most of them only for their fins. The balance of the entire ocean ecostystem rests on the health of these keystone species, so this tragic practice must end now. The economical and direct human impacts of shark fishing are also staggering: shark tourism provides as much as 39% of the GDP for some coastal and island populations.
Marine Debris
Garbage patches in the ocean have been described as being "as big as Texas", but regardless of size, these accumulations of refuse are causing major problems for marine life. Think it wont affect you? Think again! As much as 50% of the air we breathe comes from phytoplankton in the oceans. Take care of the oceans, because they take care of you!
