BENEFITING: Social & Environmental Entrepreneurs - SEE
Project Bona Fide is a non-profit organization that uses the principles of agro-ecology and community outreach to promote organic agriculture, food security, nutrition, education and reforestation in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua's agriculturally based economy is one of the poorest in the world. Although the country itself is rich in land and resources, the economy is limited by lack of investment and market links. Half of Nicaragua's people earn less than $350 per year, and malnutrition is a growing problem. Dependent on foreign aid and debt, Nicaragua is struggling to obtain economic independence, cultural integrity, and environmental preservation.
Project Bona Fide seeks to self-empower rural Nicaraguan communities so that they can raise and direct their own standards of living. Bona Fide offers farmers invaluable financial and technical support to help them gain international organic certification and build links to international markets. Additionally, Project Bona Fide focuses on preserving natural environments through regenerative agriculture, and works with local community projects geared towards health and education.
In October of this year, I will be moving to Isla Ometepe, Nicaragua to volunteer with Bona Fide for 6 months. I am hoping that my friends and Crowdrise community can help increase my impact there by donating to this important project.
Project Bona Fide is a 100% volunteer-based organization and a project of SEE (Social and Environmental Entreprenuers), a non-profit federal charity, which is tax exempt under 501(c)(3) status. Even small donations will go a long way towards helping to establish local farmers and addressing immediate health needs in the community. Funding will cover things such as Bona Fide's Children's Nutritional Program, planting projects, nursery stock, renewable energy projects (solar and wind), product transportation and materials for sanitation and waste management systems.
