I should start with some significant facts to set the stage for the fundraiser.
What is psychosis?
Psychosis is a symptom of mental illness that affects someones ability to know whats real or not. SCARY. Psychosis usually means someone is becoming affected by a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. THESE ARE CHRONIC ILLNESSES.
Who is affected?
Young people, typically between 15 and 25 years old. People finishing high school, graduating college, starting their first jobs, beginning relationships, discovering their identity, becoming independent. Basically what should be one of the most exciting times of someone's life. One can only imagine what it is like to begin to question your own mind, to begin to feel your mind is playing tricks on you, to feel scared to trust yourself.
Does treatment help?
Yes. They need long-term help from doctors and therapists to control symptoms. The EXCITING news is there is a new local clinic that treats people EARLY in their illness, and EARLY INTERVENTION has been shown to IMPROVE the course of these illnesses. With early and comprehensive intervention, these young people can get back to their lives!
Why is this cause important?
10% of people with schizophrenia commit suicide. Compared to the general population, people with schizophrenia have premature death, suffer from more physical health problems, especially heart conditions. Psychiatric treatment is key, however, improving general wellness and increasing physical activity can lead to even better outcomes. Enhancing the mind-body connection is key to help these individuals have improved quality of life.
How will this fundraiser help?
Project Clarity will raise funds to improve the physical health of these young people though increasing physical activity, and fostering the mind-body connection. This can be through paying for gym or wellness club memberships, paying for exercise classes, paying for personal training, meditation, yoga, whatever the individual prefers! The funds will also provide nutritional counseling and education. For people with transportation issues, these funds will help support transportation to the gym or class. Through creative planning, these funds will directly support figuring out how help individuals participate in a comprehensive wellness plan!
