Project Downtown is a student-run community service organization that serves over a dozen cities. Our mission is to provide essential services for the homeless and disadvantaged segments of the community. We welcome ALL to join us in providing compassionate, humanitarian services to those in desperate need. Project Downtown began as a small initiative a few years ago by a few students that were moved by the plight of homeless and needy individuals in downtown Miami. Initially, Project Downtown was a small scale organization, which passed out 30 sandwiches and whatever else could be managed with their limited resources. Although the resources were limited, the students’ compassion was not. What made and continues to distinguish Project Downtown as unique is not the physical support provided, but the emotional. The students see the people they are serving as their friends and took the time to not only distribute food, but to make relationships through the power of conversation. Furthermore, the service the students provide is not contingent upon reading a pamphlet or listening to a sermon. To this day, student volunteers participate in Project Downtown and have done so every week for over five years. Although the program has expanded, we strive to uphold the same spirit and ideals the program started with. When asked why we are doing this, our answer is the same as that found in the Qur’an: "We feed you for the sake of God alone, no reward do we seek, nor thanks." (Holy Qur'an, 76:9) As some of you know, feeding the homeless has now become illegal in the city of Fort Lauderdale. As an organization, whose sole purpose is to feed the homeless, this ordinance puts us out of service. We, as Project Downtown, have now come to a conclusion to pass out items that are not prohibited by the city. We our requesting funds to cover the cost of these items and to keep Project Downtown running smoothly like it has been for the past 10 years.
