My name is Dawn, PTA President, and I am fundraising on behalf of Treasure Island Elementary School PTA, of North Bay Village, Florida, to raise money to build a playground. Treasure Island Elementary has had no playground for at least 7 years. Seven hundred children ages ranging from 3 to 11 attend this school. Eighty six percent of these students qualify for free lunch. Many of these students are a piece of the obesity statistics. None of these children have a playground on their school property to play on as children should during recess. This is a public school where these children are getting robbed of their exercise opportunities and childhood memories which should be created while playing on a playground during their recess. These children wonder around picking up leaves and twigs for their entertainment. Due to the economy and national budget cuts aimed in particular at education, this school has no money in its budget to afford to build such a luxury. Fundraising through this schools's PTA for many years has felt the shallow pockets and economic strain of these lower income families which attend this grade A school. Every dime that the PTA raises (about $5000.00 a year) goes back to the school by helping tofund various small projects or to suppement the costs of necessary supplies. I am asking for monetary donations in hopes of raising the $50,000.00 necessary to build an ADA quality playground at Treasure Island Elementary School.
