THE STORY:

ORPHANED STARFISH FOUNDATION INC wrote -

ISEC - Instituto Sócio-Educacional pró-Cidadania (Socio-Educational pro-Citizenship Institute), is a community center based in the neighborhood of Ramos, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in an area known as Leopoldina. Leopoldina has the largest population of people living in favelas (shanty-towns) in the city. The neighborhood of Ramos houses more than 17% of those in Rio who live in favelas and those attending ISEC have incomes below the per capita minimum salary in Brazil.

Programs at ISEC include an orphanage and corresponding social services, after school tutoring, a pre-school, day-care, and classes such as sewing, cooking, gardening and computer instruction.

The Orphaned Starfish Foundation supports the computer and corresponding vocational training at ISEC. The purpose is to promote an introduction to the digital age, providing basic internet skills, software knowledge and familiartity with Windows, Word, Excel and Power Point.

As a result of ISEC's computer facilities, children are teaching one another about computers, their self-esteem is increasing, parents are able to better able to relate to their children and the students are no longer excluded and behind their peer group in terms of computer literacy. Now both children and adults in the community, who were previously excluded from opportunities because of poverty and lack of resources and quality education, now have access to computers, effective instruction through trained teachers and access to abundant information on the internet.

ISEC works with over 500 children per year. The computer facilities are open to children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. During the first quarter of 2009, each month, approximately 210 community members benefitted from the free computer programs at ISEC.
