Lac Rose (Pink Lake) is an extremely salty lake about an hour from Dakar (Senegal) out of which salt is harvested. The lake gets its name from its pink appearance. Salt diggers spend hours and hours into the water with their baskets for salt. They are for the most part women, although women are by law restricted from entering the abrasive waters.
Even heavily coated in shea butter, many women suffer sever damage to the skin, and often pregnant women suffer from delivering babies with birth defects. Additionally, as salt-harvesting is the primary income of many families in the neighboring villages, many young girls/women do not attend school.
