Project Purple is a non-profit organization that raises awareness, funds research efforts to defeat pancreatic cancer, and supports patients and families affected by the disease. Pancreatic cancer is the 4th cause of cancer related deaths and the least funded of the top 10 cancers. It is also the only cancer on the top 10 list with a single digit survival rate after 5 years.
As a nurse, I've worked with numerous patients affected by different types of cancer at different points in their lives, as well as patients receiving a new diagnosis of cancer. This news can be devastating to the patient and their families. With added research efforts, we can work towards better treatment options and finding a cure.
I chose this group because my family lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer. He was a very active man before he was diagnosed, and was always supportive of his children and grandchildren's athletic accomplishments. I know he would be excited to hear that I'll be running this marathon if he were still with us. I'll be running this year's Chicago Marathon in memory of him and in support of others battling this disease.
Thanks for checking out my page! I hope you will consider donating to this amazing charity-- any contribution will help the people and families affected by pancreatic cancer!
