BENEFITING: PROJECT PURPLE
ORGANIZER: PROJECT PURPLE
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
Truman Renner, my father-in-law, was a great man, husband, father and grandfather. He was loved dearly by his family and friends.
Sadly, on December 27th, 2006, my my father-in-law passed away after a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Before his diagnosis, I don’t think I had ever heard of the disease. After five minutes researching it on the internet, I knew he faced very long odds. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and it has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. Approximately 94% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within five years of diagnosis. About 74% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. My father-in-law survived only five months but he faced the disease with the courage and humility that defined his character. Though all who knew him still miss him today, we remember him as a wonderful husband and father, hard-working entrepreneur, and all-around good person.
In the seven years since Truman passed, I have become involved in several organizations that promote awareness of the disease and raise funds for pancreatic cancer research. I have been shocked to learn that research for this deadly form of cancer is so poorly funded. For example, in 2010 the National Cancer Institute spent an estimated $97.1 million on pancreatic cancer research. This represented a mere 2% of the NCI's $5 billion cancer research budget for that year. Perhaps this is one reason that pancreatic cancer survival rates have essentially not changed in the last 40 years. I would like to play a small role in improving these statistics and I’d like to humbly and respectfully ask for your help.
100% OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH THROUGH PROJECT PURPLE. If you are interested in supporting this wonderful cause, please respond to this email and let me know. I will provide instructions for donating the funds and supply any paperwork that may be necessary to satisfy your internal policies on charitable giving.
Thank you in advance for your support and funds for Project Purple!
I'm a 36 year old avid runner and competitor in marathons who has always run for the pure joy of the sport. Now I am running for a purpose that is near and dear to me. In 2006 Pancreatic Cancer took the life of a dear friend's father. Five short months after being diagnosed Truman, a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, hard-working entrepreneur and humble man lost his battle to this horrible disease.
Pancreatic Cancer is the 4th largest killer of all cancers and the least funded of the top 10 cancer killers today. Approximately 74% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within the first year of diagnosis. According to the National Cancer Institute It is estimated that 45,220 men and women (22,740 men and 22,480 women) will be diagnosed with and 38,460 men and women will die of cancer of the pancreas in 2013.
To help raise money and awareness I am running for Project Purple at the ING New York City Marathon. Project Purple helps fund research toward early detection and finding a cure. I am asking for your support in helping to play a small role in giving people a fighting chance against pancreatic cancer.
100% OF PROCEEDS GO TO PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH THROUGH PROJECT PURPLE.
This is my way to honor Truman for his bravery and express my love and support of him and his family. I would like the opportunity to honor your loved one as well.
Running 26.2 miles is nothing in comparison, but it gives me a way to do something. Join me and let's fight this TOGETHER!
