BENEFITING: PROJECT PURPLE
ORGANIZER: PROJECT PURPLE
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
It's hard to believe that it has been 7.5 years since I ran my last half marathon, my last race of any kind for that matter. I recall my words when I crossed the finish line in Napa in July 2008..."I am never doing that again!"
Fast forward to now, I have caught the running bug again and decided to challenge myself, to get back up to 13.1 miles in my training and run one of the most beautiful road races in the country near my home in Orange County on May 1.
When I was looking into the race, I saw two options for signing up. The first option would have been easy, simply pay the race entrance fee and be on my way. The second option was far more interesting and challenging, choose a charity that means something to me and raise far more $ for a great cause.
I came across Project Purple's OC Half/Marathon team in support of Pancreatic Cancer research and immediately knew it was the team I wanted to be a part of. You see, back in 2008, about a month before my last race, I saw my dear friends Laura & Marissa Malick's mom Marilyn for the last time. I had been training for the Napa Sonoma Half Marathon for months and had lost a lot of weight in the process. I will never forget Marilyn's straight forward "You are too thin! You need to put some of that weight back on!"
A few months later, Marilyn passed away after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer, the cause for which I have chosen to support in this my next race. I am running this in honor of Marilyn and everything she stood for.
Project Purple is running in this race to raise money and awareness for pancreatic cancer. They use funds raised to support their three main programs: research, patient aid, and scholarships.
Thank you for your support and for making a difference.
