We did it!
December 04, 2016
BENEFITING: PROJECT PURPLE
ORGANIZER: PROJECT PURPLE
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
In true Herbst fashion, half just wasn't quite enough. After six half marathons, I signed up for my first marathon last fall. This woman in pink kept passing me throughout the race and at about mile 16, I finally read the back of her shirt-- "This one's for you dad." I fell in stride with her and felt my dad join us there too in the wind like a tailwind from his years of flying and sailing. Whether it was the result of the previous six miles uphill or feeling him there with me even more than normal, it was a teary next few miles. He carried me through the infamous wall and to the finish.
For round two of my marathon "career," I'm running it for you, dad. Because even though you have been Bobby Angel for two years, one month, and 19 days now, it doesn't get any easier. And because someday, I hope that other families won't have to endure the suffering and sadness that we continue to feel each day.
Cancer is something that can hit way too close to home, and pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest ones out there-- only 6% of people survive after 5 years and the disease only receives 5% of the funds allocated by the government for cancer research. On November 6th, I will be running the NYC Marathon in honor of the strongest man I'll ever know and in support of Project Purple. Project Purple is a non-profit organization with the goal of raising awareness and funds to defeat pancreatic cancer.
Please join me in supporting the search for a cure for pancreatic cancer so that someday a daughter doesn't have to grow up without her dad there to be a part of it all.
Thank you for reading my story and taking part in the cause!
Now if only we could get Zoey into marathon shape in the next five months...
Checks can be made out to "Project Purple" with "Cathryn Herbst- NYC 2016" on the memo line and mailed to Project Purple, 94A N Main St, Beacon Falls, CT 06403. Thank you!!
