So, I just got accepted to run the New York Marathon for this great charity! It means a lot because I lost my Mom to pancreatic cancer in 2010.  See more

THE STORY:

My story -

I started running when I was 41. I never thought I would be a runner. I had medical issues when I was born and my parents were told I had only 10% of even making it out of the hospital. I fought and came home. I had a Tracheo-esophageal Fistula which came along with 7 surgeries by the time I was a year old. When I tell people about it almost no one has heard of it. Many don't make it like I did and I'm grateful  to my doctors and nurses who kept me alive!

I have now run 13 half marathons and have a few more planned in the next few months.  I have also run many 5K and 10K races with some other distances  mixed in there too.

So, what does that have to do with pancreatic cancer?

Well, nothing until we fast forward to 2009 when my Mom was diagnosed. By that time, there was pretty much nothing they could do but keep her as comfortable as possible. The Doctors and nurses in New Orleans as well as MD Anderson were great. Sadly, she lost her battle April 25, 2010.

So now that I made it well beyond where anyone thought I would make it, I enjoy the opportunities I get to give back. To make it even more special, this will be my very first full marathon and excited to be running it for Project Purple!

PROJECT PURPLE wrote -

This year pancreatic cancer surpassed breast cancer and became the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. It is more important than ever that we continue to work hard towards reversing this trend.

Our mission at Project Purple is to find a cure for pancreatic cancer and to improve the lives of patients through support, hope and compassion. The money raised for Project Purple helps us fulfill our mission statement by funding several crucial programs.

Project Purple provides funding for critical pancreatic cancer research. Thanks to our donors we are helping fund research for an early detection test for pancreatic cancer. There is currently no form of early detection for this deadly form of cancer. The best odds at survival come when the disease is caught in its earliest stages. We also fund studies which seek effective methods to treat this deadly disease. Finally, we offer grants to graduate students who are pursuing a career in pancreatic cancer research.

We at Project Purple also recognize there are patients who are fighting pancreatic cancer right now and they need our help. Project Purple assists current patients through our Patient Financial Aid program. We also provide patients with Blankets of Hope Care Bags. We believe no one should this battle on their own.

Though the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer stands at just 9%, we know that with your help we can make our vision of a world without pancreatic cancer a reality!
