I always thought that cancer was something that happened to "other" people. It turns out it can literally happen to anyone. And about three years ago it happened to my mom and she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was a long hard battle and in September of 2016 she lost it.
My mom was my biggest supporter of my running. While other people thought I was crazy, saying that it would hurt my knees someday or that they just didn't get it, my mom never had any doubts that I had found something that was going to be with me forever. She was at every half and full marathon finish line she could make it to even cheering me on at my half marathon in NY in 17 degree weather with high winds.
I have volunteered at the NYC marathon two times when I didn't make it into the lottery and my mom always told me that when I got in and ran it she would be there and we would celebrate it at one of our favorite vegan restaurants. Since I never ran it while she was around I now have the opportunity to not only raise money for the cancer that beat her but I get to run the race she always wanted me to run.
