Charity Goal MET!!!
April 09, 2017
My name is Janice Chatham. My brother, Roger Rockers, passed away on February 19, 2017, at the age of 59 from pancreatic cancer. He left behind his wife, Norma, his mother, 5 sisters, 2 brothers and many caring and supportive friends and extended family members. We miss him greatly but know that he is in a better place and is no longer in pain.
During his 3-year battle, Roger endured the Whipple procedure, chemotherapy and an experimental drug trial. Despite the odds, he approached every day with optimism, faith, and courage. He was determined to be one of the fortunate few who would surpass the 5-year survival rate of just 9%. Sadly, that was not to be. But, even in death he believed his suffering would benefit research for early detection and ultimately a cure for those in the future.
This is about more than a race. It is about the opportunity to run on a charity team to raise awareness about a deadly disease and generate funds for cancer research. This year pancreatic cancer surpassed breast cancer and became the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. However, pancreatic cancer receives just 3% of cancer research funding.
Roger never understood my love for running – especially 26.2 miles at one time! This is my way of honoring his memory and giving him a bird’s eye view of New York City :). I am asking my family and friends to help me reach my goal by donating to Team Roger. With your help, we can make a difference in finding a cure. Please share this link with your family and friends -this is truly a “team” effort.
