Each year, more than 50,000 runners gather from all parts of the world for a 26.2 mile jaunt through the five boroughs of New York City. The New York City marathon is a once-a-year party that celebrates the will power, camaraderie, pain and joy that are all part of running a marathon. During the race, the streets swell with what seems like an endless stream of runners of all ages and backgrounds.
Now consider another group of more than 50,000 New Yorkers, far less celebrated, that face a marathon struggle of their own each day – the men, women and children who experience homelessness. Each night, nearly 60,000 New Yorkers seek refuge in the City’s many emergency homeless shelters. Thousands more sleep “rough” in cars, subways and on the streets. While many of us might think of the stereotype of an older man with substance abuse issues as the face of homelessness, that face has changed over the past several years. The majority of the City’s shelter population is families with young children who have been forced out of their homes due to unemployment, medical expenses or rising rents. I am choosing to run on behalf of these men, women, and children.
Project Renewal is a nonprofit committed to ending the cycle of homelessness in New York City. This is an organization that does really great work in the city I have come to love over the last (almost) six years. Andrew and I have both interacted with Project Renewal in our work/volunteer activities and think highly of their programs. As a volunteer for the clinic at the Bowery Mission, I regularly refer clients to the Project Renewal mobile health vans for more comprehensive services, and their presence in the community is a lifeline. Andrew also regularly sees the provision of much needed medical care at the St. Francis breadline. Without the shelter and medical services of Project Renewal, many of our fellow New Yorkers would have no shot at getting back on their feet. I am so excited to fulfill a lifelong dream of running a marathon, while raising money for a cause close to my heart.
I encourage you to check out their website to learn more about the great work they do.
