While serving on active duty in the Marine Corps from 2006-2010, I was sexually assaulted by a fellow Marine. Since then, I've done everything I can to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of Military Sexual Trauma (MST).
It is believed that 500,000 men and women have been sexually assaulted in the military since WWII. Every year, cases of sexual violence in the military raise while prosecutions go down. Even then, 75-80% of accused assaulters leave the military with better then a dishonorable discharge. This year, sexual assault was declared an "occupational hazard" as women find that they are more likely to be raped while in service then to die in combat.
I started running to bring awareness to MST January 2012. Since then, I have run in several 5k road races and mud runs. From those races, I have raised $700 for RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) and their DoD safe helpline.
On August 12th I will be running in the Amesbury, MA Spartan Sprint. A 3+ mile mud run with 15+ obstacles. The Spartan Race series are known for their intensity and difficulty. I'm upping the challenge to help spread MST awarenss. For every $25 I raise for RAINN I will add 1lb to a Vietnam era Alice Pack up to 80lbs.
Supporting our troops isn't just putting a yellow ribbon magnet on your car or treating a soldier to a beer. It's making sure they are getting the help and support they need and keeping the government and military accountable for what they should be doing for our military.
Please donate and help support MST survivors.
