On May 7th I will be running, along with the #FightForFitz team, in the BMO half marathon for the Prostate Cancer Foundation BC. This cause is very close to my heart as six years ago my best friend - Stephanie Fitzmaurice’s dad, Mike, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Mike persevered and underwent surgery to try and remove the cancer when he was first diagnosed, but unfortunately despite all of his and his families strength and determination, Mike received soul shocking news over Christmas time; The surgery had not been successful, the cancer had returned. Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in Canada with 1/8 men in BC being diagnosed in their lifetime.
Stephanie and her family have been apart of my life for many years now, and I consider myself as one of the lucky ones to be apart of this amazing family. Their strength and grace throughout this whole experience has been admirable and inspiring. For those of you who are lucky enough to know Mike Fitzmaurice personally, I am sure you were as shocked as I was, as Mike is one of the healthiest, most active men I know; Unfortunately, his impeccable fitness has yet to win the fight against cancer. Alongside Mike’s fitness, and other noteworthy traits, Mike is one of the strongest most altruistic, and kind hearted individuals I have had the honour of knowing, and his composure throughout this whole experience has left us all feeling very hopeful and confident.
I feel extremely privileged to have the opportunity to run not only for Mike and his family, but for all the other families affected by this life shattering disease. By donating towards this cause, you will be helping to raise awareness and open many doors for future research. Any amount is truly appreciated. Thank you in advance, #FightForFitz.
