BENEFITING: Prostate Cancer Foundation BC
ORGANIZER: Prostate Cancer Foundation BC
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
On May 7th I will be running, along with the #FightForFitz team, in the BMO half marathon for the Prostate Cancer Foundation BC. This cause is very close to my heart as six years ago my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
This news came as a complete shock to our family. If you have been lucky enough to meet my dad you know that he is incredibly healthy and active. You would also know that he is the most selfless, kind, loving husband and father that any one could ever ask for. So much so, throughout all of this shit, it still seems to be him that is supporting all of us instead of the other way around.
Since the diagnosis our family has fought to ensure we were doing absolutely everything to make sure my dad was cancer free, and for five years we thought it had worked. Unfortunately, that was not the case as this Christmas we received the news that the surgery had not been successful, the cancer had returned, and this year would be full of hormone therapy and radiation.
In true Mike Fitzmaurice fashion, my dad has taken the news with the calmness and confidence as if the doctors were telling him he had a minor cold. We are extremely lucky that, along with the tremendous love and support we have received from our friends and family, because of constantly improving technologies there are options out there to fight back against this. Options that are only possible because of charities such as Prostate Cancer Foundation BC.
Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in Canada with 1/8 men in BC being diagnosed in their lifetime. By donating you allow these statistics to continually fall through increased awareness and the entrance of new drugs and diagnosis options into the market.
This is our way of reciprocating the incredible support that my dad has demonstrated throughout this entire process. And to help ensure that future families will not have to live with the constant fear that the cancer will return. Please help us reach these goals by donating, any amount is truly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
