Prostate Education Awareness Advocacy
Organized by: Mervyn Williams
Life has many challenges, but when you go through a life threatening experience it gives you a different perspective on how to appreciate this precious gift. Sometimes it may be compelling enough to lead you to do extraordinary things on behalf of your fellowmen. In September of 2007 I underwent surgery after being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. During my recovery I decided to re-evaluate my life, and made a decision to dedicate myself to the Education and Awareness of men 40 years and older in the State of Arizona, and around the Country on the benefits of Annual Screening for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer has an astounding almost 100% survival rate when detected early and is still contained in its capsule, but drops to as low as 32% (American Cancer Society) if it spreads outside the capsule. In all of my research it says that Early Detection with a simple DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) and a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test could help save your life. I conduct Seminars to Church groups, Corporate Employees in groups of 25-50 through their Wellness Program, and in Jamaica, and Canada. Also consult with Individuals across the country and Canada by phone, and talk radio. I served as Executive Director of a Medical Mobile Unit Non-Profit Foundation engaged in the Awareness, Education and Screening of men 40 years and older for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer. My primary responsibility was to be the Speaker on the subject of Prostate Cancer and to encourage men to get screened. I also attend Health & Wellness Fairs and distribute information literature on Prostate Health. For 20 years I was a member of the Real Estate Profession, and during that time I was also a Mortgage Loan Officer. In both cases I helped people with major decisions as they decided on the largest item they will purchase in their life. I am an active Member/Officer in my 1000+ membership local Church, and have gone on two mission trips, and one of them I spoke to audiences ranging from 800-1600 people each night over a three week period. I was a volunteer at the Lower Buckeye Jail under Maricopa County Sheriff Department where I would speak to Inmates once a week in groups of 25-30. I am the President & Founder of the Prostate Education Awareness Foundation, a registered Cancer Hotline home volunteer for the R.A Bloch Cancer Foundation, providing counsel for those diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. As a Survivor and Advocate I am a graduate of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Scientist-Survivor Program. And is also a member of Minorities In Cancer Research (MICR). In the past I have been an Emcee/Host to audiences or groups of various sizes. I am married, and the father of four children, Nadine 40, Stephan 38, Quinton 24, Lexi 22, and four beautiful Grandchildren. My wife Paula is a registered nurse for 29 years, and holds a PhD in public health, focusing on Prostate Cancer: “Spousal knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Prostate Cancer Screening among African American Males”. Addressing the role a spouse plays in encouraging their men to be screened annually. All of the above experiences help me to reach the men and women I speak to on this important subject of Prostate Cancer. During my presentation, the listeners travel through my personal journey of discovery, approach to treatment and success over this Cancer. In the question and answer period, and after the presentation people usually come to me and say “I have never heard it explained like this before, and I now have a better understanding of Prostate Cancer”. For those who have the responsibility of providing educational information pertaining to Men’s Health for their organization, whether Employees, Club members, Churches, Retreats, Teams or other Groups, please feel free to contact Merv to schedule a Seminar or as a Keynote Speaker. Let us rally together to help save Men’s lives’ from the dreadful disease of Prostate Cancer. The money I raise is to bring men and their families' an important message that will help them learn more about Screening for Early Detection. The following describes the 1hr Seminar I present: Prostate Cancer Education and Awareness 1 hr. session This Wellness Seminar is presented for the benefit of men who are 40 years of age and older, encouraging them to be screened annually for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer. One in six men will be afflicted with this disease, unfortunately some will die. However! When detected early the survival rate is almost 100%, and drops to 32% if it gets outside the Capsule. The presenter is a Prostate Cancer Survivor and brings a passionate and compelling approach on how men could deal with Prostate Cancer, from Symptoms to Treatment to Therapy, and Intimacy. Men as well as women attend this seminar, and participate in a question and answer period after the presentation.
