THE STORY:

Cristina Garcia wrote -

Sadly, it seems that children and famlies being uplifited from their homes and making the journey to strange lands in search of safety has become  too common around the world. We don't have to look too far-- we have a refugee crisis here at home. I am referring to the tens of thousands of children and families escaping violence and insecurity in our neighboring countries of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico and coming to the United States in search of a safe haven.

While the number of children seemed to slow for some time this year, unfortunately, the problems that caused so many people to leave this volatile region have not gone away. In fact, they may have gotten worse.

What has changed, in fact, is where people are getting apprehended and deported from. You may have seen this excellent piece by Sonia Nazario in the NY Times on the US outsourcing of border control to Mexico. US government officials touted reduced numbers of border apprehensions, as if that meant the problem was over.

ALIANZA AMERICAS, formerly known as NALACC, has continued to work on this issue at every level over the past year. But we’ve become increasingly worried as we hear the stories of horrific violence along the migration route: stories of families being picked up and swiftly deported from Mexico with no attention to claims for asylum; women subjected to sexual abuses by smugglers; children being used as drug mules; and once in the U.S., children anguishing in detention centers throughout our country every day

Meanwhile, deportations continue with deadly consequences.

ALIANZA AMERICAS was able to organize a speaking tour to bring Honduran childrens’ advocate Guadalupe Ruelas to cities across the U.S. Community members, elected officials and media who attended presentations in Boston, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco can attest to the power of his story.

Guadalupe reminded us that the problems of the region are not simple ones, but urged us to be engaged. Bringing these stories to life is a critical component of our work and we cannot do it without you. I am asking you to help us by making a DONATION TODAY to help us continue to bring awareness to this important matter. 50 donors at the amount of $50 each by the end of this year can help us organize another tour right away.

Thank you for all your work and your leadership Oscar. It was great to see you last year. Sorry we didn't get back to you, but we were inspired by your outreach and your generous offer to work together. I'm working with a group inside a local prison with a support committee outside the prison. We are seeking to establish a sober house and bring the returning men and their families into a community that helps with jobs, recovery from addictions, and practical support. Accompanimento.
