THE STORY:

Hello all To build rainwater harvesting systems and provide management training to conserve water, empower women, and boost community health in Kuttanad, India. I live in India a country where many people do not get proper water for drinking. In some villages women have to go more than 4 kilometer to find proper water for drinking. Eight out of ten of the 700,000 citizens of India have no access to clean water. This scarcity results in over 20,000 cases of water-related disease each year, millions of rupees in medical costs, and hours of physical labor spent collecting contaminated water. Women and children in the poorest neighborhoods suffer the most, and waste valuable time that could be spent on childcare or generating income. Solution : Install 10 Community Water Systems in rural Andhra Pradesh with Naandi Foundation. Train village members to operate and maintain the systems, and collect fees (1 cent/gallon) to cover salaries and recover system capital costs over time. Long-Term Impact Waterborne disease incidents are reduced. Women and children are relieved of the burden of fetching water. Jobs and micro-entrepreneurial opportunities are created: system operators, delivery staff, and sanitation trainers hired from the community
