Being a farmer in a country like Myanmar is not for the faint of heart.
It takes hauling over 600 pounds of water on your shoulders a day so you can bring water to your crops. Your children study by candlelight and you can only afford two hours’ worth of this dim light every night. Your only rice crop suddenly turns from a field of green to brown and black in a matter of days and you have no idea what’s causing it to wither and die.
Yet millions of farm families in Myanmar are not only resilient and hardworking, they remain entrepreneurs at heart. But they need access to well-designed products and services that help them solve their everyday problems, so they can have a leg up and out of their downward spiral.
For example, farmers need services like our farm advisory services that offer low-cost, climate-smart cropping techniques to rice farmers facing extreme changes in weather.
Our renewable energy products (solar lanterns) allow farmers to prepare produce for market and complete their farm chores after the sun goes down. Their school children can also study safely and longer at night, while saving the costs of candles.
Our goal this year is to bring our life-changing products and services to 100,000 more rural families in Myanmar. That’s about 100,000 households with better incomes and reduced daily drudgery, so families can buy food, keep their kids in school and invest in their farms. And that’s about 500,000 more people with the opportunity for a better life.
With a little capital and a lot of empathy, you can help human-centered design and innovation happen in rural Myanmar, for people who need it most. Join us.
