Our Mission

Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser.

Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center is a non-profit, located in Cleveland, Ohio, committed to fighting the root causes of systemic poverty.  NLURC provides holistic case management services to people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS through its cornerstone program Proyecto Luz.  Proyecto Luz (Project Light) is the only minority designated HIV/AIDS service delivery organization in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.  By bringing high-quality medical case management, housing, prevention, and nutrition services to individuals living with HIV/AIDS, all services provided by Proyecto Luz directly work to reduce health disparities.  In particular, the work with HIV/AIDS infected individuals provides access to critical services for those who have been traditionally underserved.

The Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center (NLURC) has recently implemented a Legal Clinic to serve the clients at Proyecto Luz.  The legal clinic serves all Proyecto Luz clients and the clients at St. Augustine Ursuline Piazza receiving HIV/AIDS case management services.  Currently there are about three hundred clients and one attorney.  NLURC is raising money to increase and expand the quality of legal services offered to the HIV/AIDS community of Cuyahoga County.

The NLURC attorney is currently being assisted by a legal volunteer and a law school intern.  The legal team will meet with clients to discuss their legal circumstances and any current legal problems they might have.  The attorney will handle clients’ legal matters in the current focus areas and the legal team will find volunteer attorneys to take clients’ cases in other areas of law.  Together they will also work on organizing quarterly Know Your Rights presentations for the broader Cuyahoga HIV/AIDS community and printing Know Your Rights pamphlets to be distributed to other HIV/AIDS case management and medical care sites.  NLURC is also creating a network of volunteer attorneys to take on cases the organization cannot take.

NLURC hopes to raise enough money to hire a second attorney to serve current clients and begin expanding legal services into the broader HIV/AIDS community.  There is a crucial need for a second attorney to provide more appropriate care for Proyecto Luz clients and create a more sustainable pathway to provide services for the HIV/AIDS community as a whole.
