Our 5th grade classes are dynamic environments that foster inquiry based learning. We believe that all students should have equal opportunities to explore and create rich academic experiences. In order to accomplish our work, we ask that all students have the same materials to learn & grow together We have a group of 130 fifth grade learners at our public school in the heart of Brooklyn. Our classrooms are filled with various cultures and life experiences due to students with families from around the world. In turn empathy and understanding are naturally embedded in our classroom communities. Students are the center of our classrooms, we encourage them to guide their own learning & become independent thinkers through questioning the world around them. The public school classroom has changed in many ways since we were kids. Remember arriving on the first day of school with supplies piled high on your desks ready for the year of learning ahead? Before school you made a special trip to buy all of your favorite folders! Things have changed! As a learning community, we decided it is important for us to share all the supplies. This teaches kids to have a sense of ownership over their community and understand the power of supporting each other's learning. Each day our 130 students will navigate their learning space and they should have the supplies they deserve and need. In each content area, students will use their notebooks and folders to discover, record, collect, organize, receive feedback, and share their thinking. These supplies are the heart of our community. They foster a sense of independence and respect amongst our students. When students have the right supplies they feel motivated and properly supported to do their best. All students deserve to feel capable, worthy, & confident. Many times students begin their school year without materials, or with insufficient resources to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. We believe that every learner should be able to begin their school year with an equal start, no matter what their socioeconomic status. By granting all students ample and high quality resources, we are setting them up for success!
Suggested Family Donation:
We suggest that families donate $80 to cover their family's cost of supplies. This will ensure that you will not have to buy supplies in the Fall just a few personal items. If you would like to donate more to sponsor another family, feel free to donate more money.
