BENEFITING: Ps 75 Parent Teachers Association Ltd
ORGANIZER: Ps 75 Parent Teachers Association Ltd
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
My name is Nick Martin, and I have been a teacher at PS75 for the past 8 years. While here I have taught Kindergarten, as well as grades 3 through 5. This year, I have had the pleasure of working in a Kindergarten NEST class.
I have trained for and run 1/2 marathons in the past. When I was 10 years old, I promised myself I would run a marathon before turning 32 years old. Well, my 32nd birthday will be 3 days after the race, and there isn't a better place to accomplish this goal.
One reason for participating in this is to raise money for the various programs that are put on by our school, which are all incredible! Another reason, however, is to show students - past, present, and future - that their teachers don't just sleep and live at school. We can do more!
Below is a blurb about my school:
PS75 is an elementary school of K-5th grade students drawn from a very diverse community and boasts one of the strongest and coveted Spanish/English dual language programs in the City. Additionally, PS75 is one of five elementary schools in Manhattan that have the ASD Nest program—a program for high functioning students with autism spectrum disorders. It’s approximately 580 students are 55% Hispanic/Latino, 25% Black/African American, 17% White and 3% Asian. More than 65% of our students qualify for free lunch under federal low-income guidelines.
Throughout the year, volunteer parents work hard to raise funds for our in-school arts and enrichment that serves every student at PS75. We do not have the affluence of other District 3 schools and yet are able to partner with our principal to provide robust enrichment programming at each grade level which includes kindergarten aides, an early bird reading program, Symphony Space social studies, ballroom dancing, Young People’s Chorus, Wellness In the Schools, New York Historical Museum, music once a week for kinder - 5th grade, Carnegie Hall Explorers, New Victory Theatre excursions, Audubon Society, Chess in the Classroom and art once a week for k-5 through Studio in a School.
These activities reinforce the core curriculum while providing children with the opportunity to explore and discover new skills and talents.
Please help us keep these programs alive by contributing to our fundraiser! Our children are our future and their success depends on quality education with an enriched curriculum.
