THE STORY:

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME TO SUPPORT THE PUBLIC GARDEN!-

Top 10 reasons that I am supporting the Friends of the Public Garden: Of course, there are endless reasons! Below, I share a few anecdotes that describe some of the reasons why the Public Garden is one of my favorite places in Boston.

10. The Public Garden was my playground. When I was small, my mother and I went on daily walks through the Public Garden, and skated on the pond in winter.

9. "Willow dogs". Because of my allergies, we couldn't have a dog at home. Instead, my mother would find fallen willow branches from one of the trees by the pond. These became leashes for our invisible and frisky dogs.

8. Best way to navigate the city. My mother didn't drive. Consequently, we walked and took the T everywhere. Our walks, even to far off places, often led us through the Public Garden, where we could enjoy the passage of the seasons on the way to our destination.

7. Flower contests. Walking through the Public garden, my family and I would often try to decide which planting we liked the best, or even which specific flower!. We felt very protective about "our" chosen flowers!

6. The search for the elusive black flower. For some reason, I was obsessed with finding a truly black flower. On a daily basis, i scrutinized the newly opened tulips and pansies, comparing shades and hoping to find a truly black specimen.

5. Walks to and from Commonwealth High School. In high school, I started my day in the best possible way: chatting with one or more of my friends on the way to school as we strolled through the Public Garden. This was a relaxing way to both begin and end my work day!

4. The ducks. I now have two daughters of my own. While I no longer live in Boston, I visit my father and stepmother as often as I can. When my daughters were young, the "Make way for ducklings" statues and the real ducks were favorite attractions.

3. Chance to run Boston. I am excited about the opportunity to support the Public Garden and to run the Boston Marathon. I have run several marathons previously, but have never been fast enough to qualify for Boston.

2. Celebrating 50! I turn 49 in two weeks, and will thus be running Boston during my 50th year.

1. Chance to support Boston. After the explosions last year, I decided that this might be my year to participate in what will be a historic run for the city and a personal milestone for me.

Bonus: My father has been doing a lot of work on the Brewer fountain and other areas, and I am very proud of his community spirit!

I have set up a training log, in case you are interested in all of the physical and mental work that I am doing to prepare, in addition to the fundraising portion of this endeavor. It is here:
