2014 Pub Mania!
EVENT DATE: Sep 13, 2014
10 BARSTOOLS. 10 HOURS. 10,000 REASONS TO CURE CANCER.
WHEN: Sat, Sept 13th, 2014 1pm-11pm
WHERE: O'Leary's Bar & Grill, 2865 Lynnhaven Dr, Virginia Beach, VA
WHO: EVERYBODY! Participants, supporters, family, friends, strangers, nomads, circus performers, I mean EVERYBODY!
WHAT: Pub Mania is an epic 10 hour, 10 team barstool challenge to benefit the Cancer Research Institute and kick cancer's stinkin' butt! So if you are fed up with cancer, come park your butt on a barstool and enjoy some pints - this event is for you!
But what exactly is a barstool challenge, you ask? Well, it's actually pretty simple. First things first, each team recruits 10 members to participate, 1 of which will be the designated el Capitan. The team commits to raising at least $50/person ($500/team) and having a different team member on their barstool for each of the 10 hours. During the 10 hours, team members (Pub Maniacs!) compete against the other Maniacs in various events to win points (trivia, lip-synching contests, etc). Teams are also awarded points for the more they fundraise prior to the event (get your Crowdrise site bumpin'!), dressing in sweet costumes, having extraordinary team spirit, and other things throughout the day. At the end of the 10 hours, the team with the most points is crowned the winner and each winning Maniac will get a awesome medal to brag about to all their friends. Dont fret - even the losers are winners because not only will you help out a great cause, but you’ll also get a sweet t-shirt just for participating. Not to mention the memories that will last a lifetime, duh.
Now that we've covered the event - let's talk about the AMAZING cause that this is for:
The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) is the only nonprofit funding organization committed exclusively to seeking immune-based approaches for preventing, controlling, and treating cancer. Unlike charities that focus on one type of cancer only, CRI’s mission is to advance a new class of treatments that have the potential to help patients with any type of cancer. The Institute also stands out among other cancer charities as a leader in responsible management of donor dollars and earns high scores from charity watchdog organizations. With donor support, CRI has been able to nurture decades of innovative cancer research by top scientists worldwide. For example, CRI funding contributed to Ian Frazer’s groundbreaking vaccine to prevent infection from four types of the human papillomavirus, which accounts for 70 percent of all cervical cancers worldwide. The institute also has assisted in the development of a vaccine for lung cancer, and contributed to the development of Provenge, the first FDA-approved therapeutic cancer vaccine. In addition, CRI has helped to bring cancer vaccines and other immune-based therapies into the mainstream of treatment options for cancer patients around the globe.
