Help Us Buy a Home
Organized by: Harry Pullen
I grew up in a shack built onto the back of an old school bus. My father was a hard-worker. At the age of 18 he finally saved up enough money to buy our first 3-bedroom house, 1250 sq. ft. It was a complete world changer for us. I had never lived in a house, a real house before. I didn't know how life was like living this way after growing up in cramped quarter with two sisters, a mother and a father who loved us dearly. Now, I am 35 years old, have been a hard-worker all my life and am married to a beautiful woman who works the graveyard shift to help support our family. We live in a small duplex, about 1100 sq. ft. with three bedrooms, one master bedroom, and two small bedrooms for the children. Its very cramped and awkwardly shaped. Don't get me wrong, its a step up from the 1970-style 2-bedroom trailer we were living in before we found this place. We pay $1025 a month in rent but neither of us have the credit to purchase a home. We have been working on building our credit for some time now, but it'll be years before we are able to even think of applying for a loan that would be required to purchase a house, much less come up with the deposit that'd be required to get the loan. Let me tell you a little bit about our family. We have four children, one boy, 14, and three girls, 13, 8, 7. Our dream would be to have a nice house on some land where our children can go outside and play freely and not worry about traffic, as we live next to a school and the roads stay busy. I work as a roofing specialist for a small company and my wife works as a waitstaff. We just don't see ourselves getting much further in life unless we hit the lottery or some sort of miracle. I know there are lots of other people out there seeking the same thing as us, and we are not any more special than they are. We just have faith. Faith that somebody out there reading this that has money to spare will donate to our family. And maybe, just maybe some day our goal will be met, hopefully before our kids have all grown up and hopefully gone to college. That alone is going to be a financial task in itself, but we'll cross that road when we get to it. Right now its about the kids, while they're still young, to have a nice house they can be proud of, to call home, to invite friends over and not be embarrassed that our duplex is tiny and there's no room for their friends to play anywhere inside. We have a yard that's no bigger than a sandbox. Our backyard is about 10 ft. wide that has an alley that runs through it. There's literally no where for them to play. $300,000 is a lot of money to ask for. But, unfortunately, that's what it costs for a house here in texas. I'm sure if we got even half of what we asked for, we could make due and find something a lot bigger and better than what we're in now. We'd be grateful for anything. We're tired of throwing our money away for rent, but that's our only option. We have tried the first-time buyers program, but we do not qualify. This seems to be our only option. If you are blessed more than others, and have a soft spot in your heart for people like us, please donate and help us reach our goal. We appreciate anything. God bless, and have a wonderful day.
