BENEFITING: MICHAEL J FOX FOUNDATION FOR PARKINSONS RESEARCH
EVENT DATE: Sep 02, 2014
As a CrossFit coach, one of my responsibilities is to ensure that people who vary dramatically in strength, flexibility, speed, coordination, etc. scale workouts appropriately. This means understanding their goals, their limitations, their perceived limitations, what motivates them, and so much more.
I’ll never forget the day when Pete discussed his scaling of double unders with me after a workout one day in the old CRCF space. I often encourage people to work toward acquiring new skills by slowing down. Sometimes we have to sacrifice some intensity in today’s workout to obtain skills that will allow us to push that much harder tomorrow. For Pete and double unders, that was all a bunch of horse shit.
Pete has Parkinson’s Disease, which has caused some muscular rigidity that turns jumping rope essentially into a one-arm exercise. Getting a rope to spin around multiple times is very difficult without the use of one arm, but it’s also completely unnecessary. Pete explained to me that doctors on the forefront of Parkinson’s research are finding that high-intensity exercise seems to do wonders for slowing the disease’s symptoms. He can’t afford to slow down today to learn some skill I deem to be important. He needs to keep moving today so that he can keep moving tomorrow.
And that is exactly what Pete continues to do. On Saturday, September 6th, Pete will be riding with a group in the New England Parkinson’s Ride. Erik, Steve, Coleen and I are not able to participate, but we want to do our part to contribute. For every $10 donated through this page, we will be doing 1 rep (as a team, so $20 = 2 total reps) in the following format:
“Pulling for Pete”
Sharing one barbell at 185 pounds:
Coleen must complete a deadlift to earn a rep
Jeremy must complete a clean
Steve must complete a clean and jerk
Erik must complete a snatch.
We will also be making our own donations, but we’d really appreciate your help supporting Big Pete as well as everyone else looking for a cure. Donations will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Whether you know Pete or not, CRCF member or not, every dollar helps.
We’ll be completing the “Pulling for Pete” workout on Tuesday, September 2nd, so get your donations in BY SEPTEMBER 1st AT MIDNIGHT.
