On Sept 9, my friend Jean Johnson and I are riding our bicycles on the Oregon coastline, from Astoria to Brookings. We plan to complete the ride by Sept 15. It is 370 miles from north to south with over 16,000 feet of elevation change.
Jean and I went to high school together and have reconnected in Colorado after 30 years. We discovered that we have a mutual love of cycling and decided to plan a trip to the Coast. It only seemed right that we try to raise money while riding. My passion, love and caring for animals was brought on as a young child. The recent financial crisis of our country has impacted them, as well as people. The plight of surrendered, lost or abused animals is getting worse by the day. Thankfully, shelters across America have gone to great lengths to help place them in new homes. These endeavors cost money.
I plan to ride the Coastline in an attempt to raise $2,500 for the animal shelter close to my home.
I have been to several shelters within the past few years and have found it very difficult to even walk through the holding areas where some of these dogs and other animals have lived for a few months. Their lives may be different in a good way, but some have ended up there due to unforeseen circumstances. I could barely get through these shelters without a great amount of heartache. Doing the job as the person at the front desk, taking in a dog or other animal that has to be surrendered due to a job change, owner passing away or someone just not wanting the animal anymore is not something I have the strength for. That takes a special kind of individual with a special heart. My plan is to do what I know I can do that will help provide the care needed for these homeless furry critters.
That is why I will donate what I raise from our ride to the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley (HSSPV) , a non- profit 501(c)(3) organization established in December of 2009, designed to offer shelter and care for lost, stray and unwanted animals until they are redeemed by their families or adopted into a new home.
It is the philosophy of the HSSPV to help these sheltering organizations not only in the metro area, but all over the state. The average stay for an animal that comes into a shelter is between 9-14 days. It costs HSSPV approximately $300 to care for an animal during its stay at the shelter. That’s $21 a day, to provide food, medical care, some training to make sure it can acclimate to society, cleaning, walking, etc.
Please help us reach our goal. Also feel free to join Jean and I for a day, two or even more to help raise money for your own local shelter. We leave Astoria, OR at 9am on September 9th, 2013. We will be posting daily on this site of our adventures - so support financially, come ride with us or stay in the loop!
Please help us thank our daily sponsors who have helped make this trip possible.
Thank you for your support!
