THE STORY:

Jean Gallagher wrote -

On Sept 9, 2013 my friend Jean Johnson and I are riding our bicycles on the Oregon coastline, from Astoria to Brookings. We plan to complete the ride by Sept 15, 2013. It is 370 miles from north to south with over 16,000 feet of elevation change.
Jean and I went to high school together and have reconnected in Colorado after 30 years. We discovered that we have a mutual love of cycling and decided to plan a trip to the Coast. It only seemed right that we try to raise money while riding. My passion for the horses was brought on as a young child and as I grew older, I began to realize the softness, kindness and connection that these equines had for their humans. In my adult life, I decided to become a farrier with hopes to embrace that love and compassion. My job has exposed me to a variety of situations, both good and bad. I do what I can, but in some cases, it is not enough.
My goal is to raise $5,000 for the Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue.
The horse industry has taken a turn for the worse for many reasons. These past few years, with our economy feeling a strain, horses are now being surrendered at an enormous rate. The draught has caused major price increases in the cost of hay and the slaughter houses have been removed from the country, which means these horses will travel to either Mexico or Canada inhumanely. People just cannot afford to spend the $300-400 to have their horse euthanized. Horses are being dropped off on random properties, and are only sometimes transferred to a safe holding place. The rescues are filling up fast. Some horses come to the shelters at a very young age, malnourished and with very little handling. Chances of these horses ever being ridden are slim to none, which means the chances of them being placed in a new home is rare. These rescue organizations take on the financial responsibility for the life of the horse.
At the Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue, the volunteer help includes cleaning of pens, feeding, watering, riding, training if necessary, etc. The vet and farrier bills are usually at a discounted rate. Due to the generous help of these volunteers, the average cost per horse each month is brought down to $150.00. Your contributions will enable them to rescue some horses at the auction as well as to provide for animals in need when they are contacted by state or local authorities. They will also take in some horses whose owners can no longer keep them. Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue does has donors instead of members, which is why my goal is to raise $2500. Contributions of any amount will be greatly appreciated and used for the rescue and care of horses.
Please feel free to join us on your bicycles for a day, two or even more to help raise money for your own local horse rescue. We leave Astoria, OR at 9am on September 9th, 2013. We will be posting daily on this site, as well as Facebook, of our adventures - so come ride with us or stay in the loop!
Please help us thank our daily sponsors who have contributed to make this trip possible.
Thank you for your support!
