BENEFITING: Save the Children
EVENT DATE: May 23, 2015
"You have to understand, no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land." - Warsan Shire
For us, the Supernatural family means one thing: Family don't end with blood. We are all united by the love for the show, the cast and the stories. We spend hard-earned money on seeing our favourite actors, many of us work several jobs so they can afford the luxury of a convention once a year. It is, however, a luxury. We are all aware of that. And if the SPN family has proven one thing time and time again, it is that together we can do so much good. We can make someone else's life better, even if it is just by listening to someone in need, by giving someone a smile, or handing out care packages at conventions. For me and many others, being part of this family of fans, cast and crew means a lot and there is a certain need to give back.
Although the arrival of thousands of refugees in Europe has been met with overwhelming support, financial help and donations in kind, there are certain reactions that cast a terrible light on some of the population in Europe. Fear, hate and attacks have been in the press constantly since last summer and every time a new even happens, it provokes doubt and more extreme propaganda. The helpful and supportive attitude may outweigh the hateful one, but it is still necessary to take a stand against it. When I first talked to some friends and attendees of Purgatory Con, we all agreed that we wanted to do something more than what we are already doing by donating clothes, food or volunteering at reception centres.
We decided to fundraise for "Save the Children", because it is a big organisation and because it has been doing amazing work for the refugees not only on their arrival in Europe, but also on their journey to a safer place. I hope that this fundraiser brings together a donation, no matter how small or big, that shows the love and support the Supernatural fans have for their show and for their fellow human beings.
