THE STORY:

Read PBDC client Erin's story about how Bright Pink and Pure Barre impacted her life!

We all love Pure Barre – for the teachers, the music, and most importantly, the “I can’t do this for one more second – oh thank goodness that’s over” feeling. I also love Pure Barre for more personal reasons. Pure Barre helped save my life.

In December 2013, I attended Pure Barre Dupont’s Sip and Shop event and met a volunteer from Bright Pink. My mom is an ovarian cancer survivor, so I was immediately attracted to Bright Pink’s mission to prevent breast and ovarian cancer in young women. While I was at the event, I opted in to Breast Health Reminders, a text message service reminding me to check in with my breasts each month and know what was normal for me.

I received my first text reminder in January, and did my breast exam nearly every month. In August of last year, I felt a suspicious lump. Though 80 percent of lumps are NOT cancerous, mine turned out to be stage 2 triple negative invasive breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy and 16 rounds of chemotherapy. I am now finished with treatment and ready to get back to the barre and back to my life!

During my treatment I completed training to become a Bright Pink Education Ambassador. I wanted to give something back to the organization that saved my life. My goal is to reach 150 young women each quarter with life-saving information about the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer. If you work in an office with women aged 18 – 45, please consider hosting a Brighten Up Workshop. It's completely free!

If you ever needed a reason to come back to the barre, just think of this: when I was in the hospital after my mastectomy, I was able to sit up in bed, much to the surprise of my nurse. She asked me how I did it and I replied, "Pure Barre!"
