THE STORY:

Dear Pure Barre Friends,

Leana asked me to write a few words about why The Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is dear to my heart. I barely knew about this evil cancer until the phone call came in from my mom and dad telling me my worst fear. My mom, my strength, my solver of problems, my BEST FRIEND, had pancreatic cancer and the doctors told them to get their affairs in order. If you knew my parents and family, you would understand why they refused to give up. My mom fought this wretched disease for 2 1/2 years. My dad and family watched her ignore all the pain and endure all the treatments with a smile on her face. Pancreatic cancer, unless detected in its very early stages, stops for no one; no matter how brave they are. My mom lost her courageous battle and I lost a part of myself I will never get back. I miss her just as much today as the day she died. Sometimes, even more.

I began to get involved with the Rolfe Foundation as a kind of therapy. They welcomed me with compassion and understanding. Now I am on a mission: no spouse, child, grandchild or friend should have to lose someone to pancreatic cancer. No human being should have to endure the agony of this evil. The foundation IS making a difference with funding for early detection and helping families who need avenues for care.

I want to thank Leana and the Pure Barre staff for opening their hearts to us. My mom would have loved your studio. She worked out almost every day. We would have come together and you would have adored her.

With gratitude and love,

Rachel Zucker Sheinkop

Here is more on the Rolfe Pancreatic Cancer Foundation:

The Rolfe Foundation began in 1999, when Michael Rolfe passed away from pancreatic cancer only two weeks after diagnosis. The friends and family of Michael, moved by his brief and brave battle, resolved to ensure that future diagnoses of pancreatic cancer wouldn’t be the grim sentence that Michael’s was. What began in a Highland Park living room as a small, community effort has grown into a formidable organization dedicated to eradicating pancreatic cancer, and supporting patients and families.

The Rolfe Foundation is one of a handful of foundations in the U.S. that funds early detection pancreatic cancer research and support services, information and awareness.  Our goal is to find an early detection test and, ultimately, a cure for pancreatic cancer. To date, the Foundation has raised over $7 million toward this mission.
