"I had to leave with nothing. Before I met my ex, I had a home, a job, friends, a life. He took everything from me! Now I am homeless, my credit is damaged, and I have lost everyone important to me. But you know what? He underestimated me. I am not defeated. I just have to start over, that's all. Thankfully, I have the YWCA to help me." (YWCA client)
The YWCA ALIVE Program has been selected by the Allstate Foundation to participate in the 2014 Purple Purse Challenge as a Community Partner. Funds raised through the Purple Purse Challenge will be used to support financial empowerment services for survivors of domestic violence.
Domestic Violence affects one in four women in their lifeime. Domestic Violence is not a topic people like to talk about and when people do talk about it, it is the physical abuse that is most often the focus of conversation. However, financial abuse (using finances as a tool of power and control) happens just as frequently.
The woman quoted above is one of the many survivos of domestic violence who have experienced the devastating impact of economic abuse. The Allstate Foundation, through the Purple Purse Challenge, is raising awareness about financial abuse as well as providing opportunities for local domestic violence programs to provide financial empowerment services. We are so excited to be a part of this challenge and even more excited that we will be able to provide necessary services to the individuals we work with.
Please join us in this challenge by either making a donation or by hosting your own fundraiser. Thank you for your support!
