The Crossing For A Cure is a long-distance endurance paddle challenge that takes paddlers 50 miles across the Gulfstream from Bimini in the Bahamas back to the Florida mainland. The event was inspired because of the incredible health benefits of the Ocean for those living with Cystic Fibrosis. Travis Suit, another paddler in the competition, has a daughter Piper who was diagnosed with CF when she was four years old.
Colin Hickey, Reid Schupp, Michael Dowling, and Travis Burt will cross the Atlantic Ocean representing team "Q4", implying fourth quarter, in an all out effort to inspire, raise awareness, and help raise much needed funds to help find a cure for the disease!
Many ask, "Why are you taking on such a crazy task?" and simply the answer is we should be thankful that we live with the physical health and wellness that could take on such an ambitious task and help those impacted by CF be more inspired. We will use our physical strength and mental determination as a means of helping those affected by CF to live a more holistic life.
About Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.
