BENEFITING: Queens Centers for Progress
ORGANIZER: Queens Centers for Progress
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
Family, Friends, and Colleagues:
It is not often that I share my experiences with a charity that I am involved with, as I have always considered it a somewhat private endeavor.
This week I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Queens Center for Progress, and spend time with the developmentally disabled children and adults which it serves. QCP, located in Jamaica, N.Y., sits in the heart of Queens and provides therapy, job training/placement, day programs, advocacy, service coordination, housing, and many other services for individuals a lot less fortunate than us.
I left my visit extremely grateful for the health and well being of my family, but even more powerful, was the ability to see first hand how QCP changes lives. QCP provides a purpose for these individuals, who without this organization would struggle in the society we all function in today. Purpose gets me up in the morning, and drives me throughout the day....I could not imagine a life without it.
As a business person, I inquired about the numbers and funding for such an important organization. I was astounded to hear that less than 2% of its revenue comes from private donations and fundraisers. I thought as I left, I should be doing more.
I am running the NYC marathon, which will be my first full marathon, with Team QCP in 6 weeks. I expect lots of pain, although my training has been relatively smooth up to this point. Many of the kids and adults that I met this week, will be at Mile 15 to cheer me on. They will be a great source of inspiration! I have attached some pics of QCP and the wonderful children I had the privilege of meeting.
If you are in the position to donate, please click on the link below. Any amount would be greatly appreciated! More importantly, I wanted to raise awareness of the great things QCP is doing in New York.
All the best,
