A few days before my 30th birthday, I shared with my new girlfriend my dream of an online encyclopedia on Christian faith and LGBTQ identities. I imagined a web community where existing resources were compiled and curated to help LGBTQ people navigate the waters of faith and identity.
"Well, couldn't you do that?" she said. "You know how to build websites. You're a good writer. Couldn't you do that while you're waiting for a congregation?"
I tried to argue with this idea, but it was difficult to deny that I wanted to do it (and, bonus, a gorgeous woman was cheering me on). So, on my 30th birthday, I asked my friends & family if they were willing to chip in $5 or $10. I set what I thought was a long shot goal of $1000. Within a WEEK we had passed $2000, and I set out to make my dream happen.
Today, two years later, Queer Grace is home to thirty-four specially commissioned entries by sixteen authors (and me). The list of book, video, podcast, and online resources is continually expanding, along with a constantly growing collection of Twitter accounts and blogs where LGBTQ & Christian people are already sharing their stories. The Queer Grace home page features direct links to find a welcoming and affirming church, explore existing online communities, or get in touch with crisis helplines. And because of the amazing generosity of friends, family, and strangers around the world, I could afford to spend time building the site from the ground up and can continue to pay my authors a small stipend for their work.
(Also, that girlfriend is now my fiancee, and is still QG's biggest cheerleader. Love you, babe. <3 <3 <3 )
On this, Queer Grace's second birthday (and my 32nd!), I'm asking for financial support again. With your support, I can continue to source new authors and expand the encyclopedia even further. I might even be able to build an editorial team that works together to add new resources as they arise!
I've recently been soliticing donations through a pay-what-you-want option on PayPal for stickers of the Bonhoeffer quote I illustrated a few months back (seen above). If you'd like to take advantage of that option, you can donate either on Crowdrise or through PayPal (paypal.me/emmykegler) and FB message me your mailing address so I can send you whatever number of stickers you want.
