I have been a volunteer and member of the Board of Directors with SMART dating back to 2007. As many of you can appreciate as well, my schedule is plenty hectic between my work, family/friends and extra-curriculars, but the time I spend with SMART is something I look forward to every week and that has been truly rewarding. It goes to my passionate belief that any child, regardless of social or economic status, should have the opportunity to receive a good-quality education.
In my several years as a volunteer tutor, I've helped my students work through and understand those "fun" topics such as algebra or when to use lay versus lie in a sentence...to name a few. The best part was seeing each of my students enter high school with social and academic confidence and (on several occasions) have aspirations to be the first in their family to attend college.
This year, I will be a volunteer mentor for the first time. I'm looking forward to taking my mentee on his first visit to the SFMOMA, Cal Academy of Sciences and ice skating at Justin Herman Plaza. Most of all, in our time together, I am looking forward to imparting on him whatever helpful advice and guidance on life and school that can help him on his journey of leading a productive life and achieving his life goals, which would ultimately change the lives of many in his family.
This holiday season, to celebrate SMART’s 15 year anniversary, I’m embarking on my own fundraising campaign to help SMART reach their goal of raising $15,000 from volunteer fundraising. I've set a personal goal of $2,000 for myself, so am hoping you could help me get closer to achieving, and exceeding, that goal. All funds raised goes towards the programs and support SMART provides to its students. If you'd like to learn more about SMART, please visit the website at http://www.thesmartprogram.org/.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support, and happy holidays!
