Why I run...
January 23, 2017
My story: I have never been a runner. I repeat... Not. A. Runner.
In August, our youngest daughter (Catey) casually mentioned joining the Mitchell's Place, Race for the Place running group. Basically, a couch to 5k group that would prepare her for a relay team that would raise money to benefit Mitchell's Place. Some small piece of me was intrigued and I thought, "what the heck, I'll give it a try". First group run, I said "no way". Second week I said "I can't do this". Every single time I followed with, "Liam works so much harder than this every single day. He never gives up. I can do this. I can do this."
Fast forward 6 mos. I met the couch to 5k goal, I met the 10k goal and now it's time for my first 1/2 marathon!! No relay team, it's all on me. I can't thank Run University and Danny Haralson enough for the coaching and encouragement. I'm very excited and hope that you will help with the fundraising piece of my goal!! In advance, I thank you and the children at Mitchell's Place thank you also!
When our grandson Liam was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder two weeks after his second birthday, he was almost totally non-verbal. He could not communicate his needs or wants appropriately. He did not initiate play with his twin sister or other peers. Liam did not respond to his name or other verbal prompts. He did not seek out affection or comfort from us at all.
Fast forward: Currently, at age 4, Liam has a full vocabulary and is able to communicate his needs and wants with ease. He initiates play with his siblings and his peers. He loves to be hugged, thrives on praise and affection, and can follow verbal prompts.
We credit his progress over the past year and a half to Mitchell's Place. The structure of the school day, the therapies, and the integration of typically developing peers has helped Liam find his words and develop social skills.
We are confident that Mitchell's Place is giving Liam his very best chance to be fully prepared for a transition into public school by kindergarden.
