The Story

EVENT DATE: Jun 23, 2018

5K & 10K Walk and Chip Timed Run Saturday, June 23th, 2018 at Quiet Waters Park located at 600 Quiet Waters Park Road Annapolis, Maryland 21403.  This event raises much needed funding to support the mission of the Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland (HFM). HFM is dedicated to improving the quality of life to patients wtih bleeding disorders. This mission is accomplished through community outreach, educational development, advocacy and patient support. The Hemophilia Foundation of Maryland (HFM) was founded in the 1950’s by a group of concerned families. HFM offers assistance throughout Maryland from our central office in Baltimore. Our Community consists of bleeding disorders such as: Hemophilia: An inherited disorder, occurring in approximately 1 out of every 4,000 males, transferred genetically from mother to son. Spontaneous mutation can also occur without any previous family history. Hemophilia is a clotting factor deficiency, Factors VIII and IX, which causes uncontrolled bleeding into joints, organs and tissues. Internal bleeding, without prompt and proper treatment, can cause severe pain, joint damage, orthopedic problems and life threatening circumstances. Hemophilia treatment is accessible and successful. Costs, however, can range between $100,000.00 to $500,000.00 annually. Delayed treatment can give rise to medical complications. Experiments in gene therapy are now beginning. This possible “cure” will greatly enhance the individual’s quality of life. Von Willebrand Disorder: A genetic bleeding disorder affecting 1-3% of the general population is found in both males and female.
