BENEFITING: World Medical Relief, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Oct 16, 2016
My name is Brian Nguyen, and I'm a 3rd year Pediatric Resident Physician in Detroit with Authority Health and the Children's Hospital of Michigan. Picture this: in a large Southfield warehouse, on an almost daily basis, retired yet dedicated volunteers sort through thousands of recycled medical supplies, equipment, and medications that have all been donated. They arrive in bulky, dusty cardboard boxes, so to witness these volunteers in action is a thing of beauty. I had the privilege of joining them on one particular day, and they immediately made me feel like family due to their faith in their mission: to facilitate the distribution of surplus medical resources where they are needed.
Since 1953, World Medical Relief has been serving the sick and poor locally, nationally, and internationally. They provide medical supplies and equipment to hospitals and clinics in developing countries. They provide medications at an affordable price to those who are un-insured or under-insured in the local community. They distribute blankets and personal hygiene products to area shelters. And soon enough, they hope to open examination rooms for doctors to give back to the community. Remarkably, this all started with a Detroit housewife, Irene Auberlin, who was inspired by the plight of a single orphan during the height of the Korean War. www.worldmedicalrelief.org
I will be running in my 4th Full Marathon on Sunday, October 16th at the Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon. My prior race experiences have ranged from Boston Qualifying to almost race-walking due to injury. My goal is to spread the word and raise money for this incredible organization, World Medical Relief, Inc. With your contributions, I will train hard and run the best race that I can during my final year in Residency.
