BENEFITING: Immune Deficiency Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 17, 2015
Welcome to my Race for PI fundraising page! I am raising funds to support the Immune Deficiency Foundation’s goal to improve the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of persons with primary immunodeficiency diseases through advocacy, education and research. Over the next four months I will be training for the Baltimore Running Festival’s Marathon (26.2 miles) in Baltimore, MD, while also raising awareness for Primary Immunodeficiency, or PI.
As you may not know, I was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), a type of PI, in 1999 after years of recurrent infections. I have been fortunate to have advocates to help me fight through the struggles that are a part of living with an invisible illness, such as missed days of school and work, constant appointments with medical specialists and of course dealing with insurance and treatment issues. Ultimately, all of this has taught be how to be an advocate for myself and others.
Primary immunodeficiency diseases are a group of rare, chronic conditions caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune system. The World Health Organization recognizes more than 200 types of these diseases. In the U.S., there are approximately 250,000 people diagnosed with PI and thousands more go undetected. This means that in the U.S., approximately 1 in 1,200 persons have a diagnosed PI. Years ago, a diagnosis of a PI meant extremely compromised lives, not just for the patients but for their families as well. Today, with early diagnosis and appropriate therapies, many patients with that same diagnosis can live healthy, productive lives. I am taking on this challenge as proof of this.
One of the greatest challenges faced by individuals diagnosed with PI is finding the right information and resources when they need it. With knowledge and foresight from their personal experience, IDF was founded by families of children with primary immunodeficiency diseases and their physicians to help meet those needs. It is with the spirit and energy of this keen perspective that IDF exists today, thriving as an organization dedicated to individuals living with PI.
Please support my commitment and donate to my Race for PI efforts today.
Thank you for your support! ~Colin
