THE STORY:

Jarral Ryter wrote -

Racing the Tour Divide Madness.

I have had Type 1 diabetes for almost 16 years. I don't think it is much fun and the complications like going blind really bite. But when I look at my friends that have children with diabetes and think how much harder that is it kills me. I want to help try and find a cure and prevent diabetes for future children. I also want to show these same kids that they can do whatever they want in life by doing ridiculous races. I think by researching diabetes we will solve mysteries involved with other autoimmune diseases and who knows what else.

I have done many long mountain bike races and done well. But this is by far the longest. It is called the Tour Divide. It is self-supported (you have to carry all your camping gear, food etc, or buy it when you can in the small towns you may pass by), it is 2,700 miles (Banff, Canada to Antelope wells, NM on the Mexico border), and has a couple of hundred thousand feet of climbing. You ride as long as you can, sleep, eat and repeat until you’re done. There are no rest days or designated stopping locations. There will be snow, rain, mud, grizzly bears, wicked rabbits and all the things that go with riding the continental divide on rough dirt roads in the woods. Oh yeah, I will have to carry insulin and try to check my blood sugar under a tree in the dark and in the rain/snow.

The race starts June 8, in Banff Canada. I will wear a GPS spot tracker so you can watch my progress on your computer from your cozy house as you drink a cup of coffee (or whatever). I will also carry a HD GoPro Camera to document the ride as well as I can. Check out my blog if you want to donate directly to me to help fund this or want to check out other things I’ve done.
